The 5 Best Ski Resorts in Switzerland

Colette Lewis

The country of Switzerland is truly beautiful, with its gorgeous landscape full of stunning lakes and magnificent mountains. So, when choosing where to ski in Europe, there can be few better spots than this. From quaint, tranquil villages to enormous towns with unmissable après ski parties, we’ve selected the very best winter resorts that Switzerland has to offer.

St. Moritz

St. Moritz

Just a few miles from the highest mountain of the Eastern Alps, Piz Bernina, St. Moritz has long been favoured as one of the best ski resorts in Switzerland and has enjoyed the privilege of hosting the Winter Olympics twice in the past century, and the 2003 Skiing World Championships to boot. As well as boasting a number of brilliant slopes for skiing and snowboarding, it is also well-known for its annual ‘White Turf’ horse races, which have been taking place on the frozen Lake of St. Moritz since 1907.

Zermatt

Boasting breath-taking views of the beautiful and iconic Matterhorn, one of the highest peaks in Europe, Zermatt is a brilliant spot for skiing, while its altitude means that it is possible to ski here right into the summer. It has a charming, pedestrianised village as well as a good variety of slopes, including opportunities to try risky, off-piste heli-skiing or fast, rough moguls. It is also one of the best resorts in Switzerland for its après-skiing culture, with a great ambiance created by the large number of cosy little pub-style establishments at the foot of the Matterhorn, a number of which feature live bands.

Wengen

One of the few almost car-free resorts in Europe, Wengen has some fantastic slopes, and has been playing host to the annual world-famous Lauberhorn ski races since 1930, as well as being part of the Jungfrau Marathon, one of the largest mountain marathons in the world. It is especially family-friendly, with a nursery slope that is ideal for young children, as well as a good number of toboggan runs, including one that measures an impressive 4.5km!

Davos

One of the biggest resorts in Switzerland, Davos covers an enormous five different sectors and has a seemingly endless supply of exciting runs. Particularly of note are the beautiful slopes that trace their way through the forest, up to 12 kilometers in length, down to the picturesque valley floor. The size of the resort makes it almost seem more like a city than a town, meaning that it has a much larger number of bars and hotels than many other resorts, as well as several great quality sports facilities, including swimming pools and ice-skating rinks to boot.

Mürren

For those seeking a quiet, tranquil retreat, Mürren, an idyllic little village nestled high in the Alps, is a hidden gem of Swiss skiing perfection. High enough that the roofs are almost always covered in snow and offering unadulterated, panoramic views of the breath-taking three mountains, Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, the beauty of this resort seems almost too good to be true. The slopes are of great quality too, with over 50 kilometers of runs, one of which has a whopping 1,400 yards of vertical change!
